Who to root for?

Today is the day. East vs. West. Eastern Connecticut vs. Whitman. Holowaty vs. Holowaty. For the first time, a legendary coach faces his son in an official game. Bill Holowaty, New England’s most successful coach in any sport, takes his Warrior team across the country to Walla Walla, Wash., to face his son, Jared Holowaty, and the Whitman Missionaries. If you know Bill or Jared, you know this is going to be one heated series between the two of them.

Being related to both of them, Bill is my uncle and Jared my cousin, I have to say that the two are some of the most competitive people that I have ever met in my life. My mom, Bill’s sister, matches his competitiveness and Jared is not far off.

That leaves me facing a big dilemma. I played for my uncle at Eastern Connecticut for four years but will have to see Jared all summer when I return to Walla Walla. The easiest thing for me to say is that I hope there is a split, leaving both parties with some victories. I know both of them will not back down and both will be out to kick the others butt and win all four games.

No matter the outcome, I am just glad to be a part of this historic meeting and glad to be a part of such a successful family.
